The State of Employer Brand Management

The State of Employer Brand Management The phrase ‘The Employer Brand’ gets over 400,000 Google searches per year and is known to management teams globally. What’s special for me is that I had the chance to sit-down with the creator of the idea â€" Simon Barrow. Have a listen to the conversation below or continue reading for a full summary of this important session, and don’t forget to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast. What issues did the idea have to surmount in the early years? Well, I’ve got here ‘The Employer Brand“, by Tim Amber and Simon Barrow from the London Business School, July 1996. I picked out some key findings, which I think may be of interest. Number one, the introduction of marketing terms was a terrible problem for HR and internal communications, A, for the meaning, and B, for what they meant deep down. Somebody said, ‘Don’t bring that marketing flim-flam here.’ There was no recognized language available in management speak for covering the combination of culture, brand and reputation. Indeed, when we introduced corporate culture and employer brand as a concept, people were, ‘Well, it’s the same, isn’t it? What’s new? It’s just corporate culture.’ Well, clearly, they didn’t know much about brand management. Is employer brand a nice-to-have? It would be lovely if everybody said, ‘This is a basic way in which we run a business,’ but we’re not always as perfect as that. So often, people are pitched into doing this stuff right, when something bad happens. You know, we’re losing people. We cannot recruit X and Y. Why did we fail to get so, and so, and so? Some sort of failure, in my experience as a consultant, is what often drives the first call. It’s not the best way, but it’s more often the usual way, compared to saying, ‘How do we run this business in an outstanding way?’ One client once said, “Simon, how do we make this ship move faster through the water?” Well, that’s a very big, broad question. I think the employer brand might be a way. That’s why we want to talk. Did you expect the employer brand to take off the way it has? I always had a belief in it because it was logically so strong, but it was a slow start for the reasons we unearthed with the LBS study I was quoting just now. It is good to see the growth in the number of employer brand managers within organizations. It’s good to see the continuing conferences around the world, the books and articles and the number of Google searches on this subject is a good indication.   What makes employer brand management so important today? Well in 1985, tangible assets, that’s plant, machinery, buildings, and cash, formed 56% of corporate assets. Today, that is just 20% of value. So 80% of value is in intangibles, what used to be called ‘good will’ in brands, in your ability to attract, engage, retain, and motivate great people. That’s critical. That’s what’s driving the importance of EB thinking. It used to be the case in client services businesses, that the key success factor was the ability to win clients. Doing the work was not the difficult bit. Winning it was difficult. I fundamentally disagree with that. In my view, if you run a service business today, it’s the ability to win and engage great people. Start with them. What companies do you rate as outstanding employer brand managers today? With one exception, none of these have appeared yet in the employment brand management awards: Goldman Sachs: An outstanding employer brand. It’s tough. It’s truly diverse. It’s unforgiving. It offers potentially life-changing earnings. And it has fantastic alumni. Will you find any of that in whatever they say online? Maybe not, not in the way I’ve just said it. Hiscox: The insurance business, they have transformed a dull industry. The senior management involvement in the employer brand, the as-good-as-our-word, which applies absolutely internally as well as externally, their creativity and their teamwork. COOK: A frozen food brand. 850 people making outstanding frozen food in Sittingbourne, Kent. Employer brand leadership ticks all the boxes, including one special mention, which is that the Managing Director was the Human Resource Director. Unilever. A great world group with its heart in the right place. Note the reaction inside and out to the Kraft approach earlier this year. Note its commitment to sustainability. Decency maybe an odd word in a commercial context but they have it. I respect them. McKinsey: It’s tough to get into, but it’s a personal brand for life. It’s a true academy company. Just look at their alumni. John Lewis: The U.K. retailer with 80,000 or so partners, measures itself on their happiness. One of the founding beliefs, the happiness of our people. And the boss who gets a bonus, exactly the same percentage of his or her salary, as everybody else. It’s distinctive. It’s compelling. How to Negotiate the Job Offer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Negotiate the Job Offer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career You wanted this job so bad, and finally the offer arrived. The adrenaline is flowing freely, and you feel like sharing the good news with the entire worldâ€"certainly with those who contributed to your win. But is this job a really good deal? Could you have gotten a better deal if you only knew how? The majority of people simply melt once they get a coveted job offer. They’re so grateful and they feel so saved that they think that by crossing the finish line, their goal has been attained. However, that is not the case. A job offer is a significant milestone indeed, but negotiating your best deal right now is the only time you can do it. You’re now in the falling-in-love periodâ€"like when you were in your teens and falling in love and your love interest could do no wrong and was simply perfect. Well, once the company you’ve applied to goes through the arduous and protracted hiring process and decided on you as the winner, they want to move on. At this point, they don’t want to go back to square one and start the process all over. That’s the time to negotiate. Compensation negotiation is a six-step process. First, identify what’s important for youâ€"for example, size of company, reputation, challenge, work-life balance, and your future manager. Second, carefully examine the offer by talking to as many people as you can who can provide relevant information about your areas of interest concerning the company and the job. Third, compare the offer with your priorities by writing down your thoughts. Consider the pluses and minuses, and prioritize them. Then do the same by writing down your feelings and emotions about taking this job. Fourth, you must perform your due diligence by defining your dealing points and your deal-breaking points. Be truthful to yourself, but stay flexible. Remember that it’s not the money that you make but the money you keep. So review in detail the package of company-paid benefits. I can think of at least 20 different items in such a packageâ€"from medical coverage to tuition reimbursement. Fifth, negotiate your best deal. Most companies expect you to do that. Show an unusual level of excitement about the opportunity, but register disappointment with the compensation. As a career coach, I train clients by practicing mock negotiations together with them. Initially, during such mock negotiations, many people feel awkward, but after we do this a few times, they learn this new skill. The sixth and final step is to make the decision. Consult with your spouse, advisers, and career coach. If you’re a high-level executive, you may want to consult with a lawyer and a financial adviser as well. A job offer should be executed in writing and with the parties signing it. At some small companies, the process is much simpler, and if there’s no written document to sign, it still behooves you to summarize your understanding of the compensation and document it via e-mail.

University Advertisement Shows Up On Porn Site #fail

University Advertisement Shows Up On Porn Site #fail Once in a while you get a random email which doesnt go into the spam folder, as its supposed to. Anyway, in this world of cut-throat marketing and online presence of universities, attracting students with ads is gaining momentum. Recently, I have seen an increased number of University ads on my facebook timeline. Along with other websites and radio channels outside of the UK. Yes, I listen to radio channels broadcasting from France and even Dubai! But it was shocking to see a University of Liverpool advertisement on a porn site on the prime spot (pardon the pun). What I tried after that was to see the code behind the element, just to be sure that the advertisement wasnt purposely put up there and is used from one of these million ad services. You can find the image proof by clicking on the link below. The reason I have not attached it to the post is to avoid showing adult images if you are at work or university.   Image 1 of University of Liverpool ad on a porn site Image 2 of University of Liverpool ad on a porn site The actual ad is decent and advertises some good courses from the University of Liverpool. But the University has to get stricter control over its marketing policy. As an educational institution, it is quite frankly shocking to see its name on a porn site. I hope this post raises awareness of the pitfalls of online marketing. I believe the University of Liverpool is a decent university with good reputation. It could save some marketing budget and increase the budget of their Careers service maybe, instead of losing face by placing ads on porn sites. Innocent mistake, but reputational damage could hurt. Image Credit: writingbold UPDATE 1: 17.30 hours THIS WAS BROUGHT TO MY NOTICE AS A FUNNY EMAIL MESSAGE WITH PICTURE. I WAS NOT IN THE ACTIVITY TO FIND IT MYSELF. PLEASE MIND YOUR LANGUAGE WHEN SENDING ME MESSAGES. UPDATE 2: Editor 22.00 hours  I have sent an email to University of Liverpool Marketing Officer notifying about this blogpost and the advert. Awaiting reply. UPDATE 3: Editor 9 August 2012  Email from Head of PR, University of Liverpool, Thank you for your email and for drawing our attention to this. An advertisement for our online programmes was placed on this website in error by an agency responsible for marketing our online provision.  We have a strict policy with regard to advertising and take every possible measure to ensure these kinds of mistakes do not occur. Could You Make A Living From Coaching Sports Teams - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Could You Make A Living From Coaching Sports Teams People with enthusiasm for physical activity could select from a broad list of different professions. However, in this article, we’re going to discuss the possibility of becoming a sports coach. It’s a goal many people would like to set, but most have no idea how to reach it. Also, lots of folks wonder if it’s even possible to earn a decent wage. Well, the information on this page should help to set the record straight once and for all. Readers should know within a couple of minutes whether or not becoming a sports coach is a suitable career choice for them. What traits does a person need to become a successful coach? Firstly, it’s important to note that professional coaches are a rare breed. They require many different skills and traits to succeed in the career. They include: Good physical strength and sporting ability The mind of a master strategist Leadership skills Capacity to motivate others A sound understanding of biology There is no need to worry if a candidate doesn’t have those qualities already because it’s possible to improve their skills. Of course, it helps if the person has a reasonable understanding of sports and the human body ahead of time. However, there is nothing new potential coaches can’t learn along the way. How does someone prepare to be a sports coach? There are lots of different ways in which people can get themselves job-ready. In some instances, a professional sports background is advantageous. Individuals who’ve already experienced success in the sporting world might not require the same qualifications as everyone else. For example, ex-professional football players will score roles coaching amateur teams without having to present a resume in most instances. The people who own those teams are always on the lookout for individuals with lots of experience. Still, the following strategies should assist everyone else in reaching their goal. Obtain relevant qualifications Network with sports team owners Offer to coach a couple of sessions for free A Physical Education Master Degree is always going to come in handy, but some people can’t head off to university because they still need to pay the bills. With that in mind, it’s sensible to search for online learning specialists that offer courses of that nature. In most instances, it’s possible to complete all the work in your spare time. That allows students to continue working and providing income for their families. It just takes a little longer to qualify. Where does a sports coach find work? Those with the right skills and experience can find employment in an array of different places. It all comes down to what the individual hopes to achieve, and their sport of choice. Some professionals might choose to contact: Local schools State universities Amateur sports teams Professional sports teams It makes sense to start small and progress at a steady pace. That is especially the case if the person doesn’t have a sports background. So, the first step is to contact schools and universities in the local area. Individuals who want to work as physical education assistants will have to undertake another course first. However, lots of schools and colleges run their sports clubs out of hours. That means the person coaching them doesn’t require a teaching degree. The coach just needs the relevant skills or qualifications listed above. After a couple of years running the high school soccer team, the individual can move towards amateur and then professional clubs. How much can a sports coach earn? It’s difficult to give an average figure because earnings depend on the type of employment. They can also relate to the success of the sports team. Still, many people manage to secure a decent salary if they’re committed to the profession. In some instances, that might mean the individual has to take on more than one job. They might spend their days coaching a small professional team, and then a couple of hours in the evening at a local school. Of course, coaches that are lucky enough to gain a position at a successful club will earn a fortune. Indeed, some of the top professionals in the business get as much as $7,000,000 per year according to news reports. In conclusion, yes, an individual can make a living from coaching sports teams. It’s just that they often have to think outside of the box and work more than one job. Still, if physical activity and sport is an important part of their lives, those people will find a way to succeed. That is the case, even if it means starting new teams from scratch.
